Baby Giraffe “Milani” Care Support

Against extraordinary odds, the Tanganyika team is fighting to save a premature giraffe calf.

Over the past month, our veterinary and animal care teams treated Virtue, a pregnant adult female reticulated giraffe, as she gradually lost her appetite. Despite extensive diagnostics, consultations with specialists, and every treatment available, her condition continued to decline. Faced with an impossible decision, our team chose to perform an emergency C-section in hopes of giving her calf a chance at life before saying goodbye to Virtue.

Every giraffe neonatal specialist and veterinarian we consulted told us they had never known of a premature giraffe delivered this way to survive.

And yet…She took her first breath.

Today, this tiny fighter is receiving around-the-clock intensive care from a team that refuses to give up on her. Every hour is critical, but she continues to amaze us. She’s taken her first steps, is gradually learning to take a bottle, and grows a little stronger with each passing day.

Most people never get to see what happens behind the scenes at a wildlife park.

They don’t see veterinarians making heartbreaking decisions in the middle of the night. They don’t see animal care specialists working in shifts to ensure a newborn is never alone. They don’t see the neighboring zoos, veterinary experts, and giraffe specialists across the country answering late-night calls because everyone shares the same goal—to give this calf every possible chance.
